Chaewon Song is a knitwear major at Institut Francais de la Mode in Paris, France. With names like “Ellipsoid '' and “Conoid Surface'', Song's work takes a mathematical approach to dress. By playing with perception in her work, Chaewon Song creates fabric embodiments of geometric wonders.
A conoid surface is a ruled surface that consists of a rotating parabola, or hyperbola about one axis- Or its Look 03 from Chaewon Songs' most recent collection, in which case it's a structured and diamond emblazoned dress, with a corset top and small cutouts running up the torso, and plastic rings of different sizes piercing the bubble shaped skirt. These plastic rings, a signature of Song, weave through the small cutouts in the skirt, each ring varies from 1 ¾ to ¼ in and gets wider towards the equator of the skirt to accentuate the “conoid” shape.
The way Song uses mixed mediums and plays with shapes is reminiscent of found object art, using a variety of textures-whether it is metallics, knits, or diamonds to give each look added volume.
To embody the idea of an ellipsoid, Song created a gown with an hourglass shape (Look 05), the skirt portion of which was an oval take on a bubble skirt- or an ellipsoid. At the base is pleated shimmery pink fabric, matching the diamonds decorating the top of the gown, giving the gown its sparkling effect. Small cutouts also adorn the gown top to waist.
It takes not only a mathematical mind but a creative one to bridge geometry and art the way that Song does through her work.
I highly recommend looking into Songs' work but I don't recommend attempting to understand what an ellipsoid is or you may get a headache. Song recently started experimenting with bags and jewelry, working her geometric configurations out of metal, proving to beequally as impressive as her work with fabric.

Pour incarner l'idée d'un ellipsoïde, Song a créé une robe en forme de sablier (Look 05), dont la jupe est une version ovale d'une jupe bulle ou d'un ellipsoïde. À la base se trouve un tissu rose brillant plissé, assorti aux diamants qui décorent le haut de la robe, ce qui lui donne un effet étincelant.
