Fusing geometric shapes and primary colors, Central Saint Martins student Cho Hyeon Kim toys with a childlike sense of joy in her bright and playful work. It can't be said that Kim's designs necessarily mesh with their surroundings, but rather take on a playful rejection of seriousness.
Perhaps that's the reason behind the stylistic choice of shooting her final collection in such an industrial background-to contrast the cheery nature of Kim’s abstract designs. Capped sleeves and a utilitarian collar that can be worn folded or popped are Kim’s reinterpretation of a classic silhouette.
Mocking practicality or embracing it? -It's left to the viewer's interpretation with the “Jacket Purse”. What starts as a gray reversible vest, is taken off to reveal a hidden zipper and armholes that become bag handles.
Every shape created by Kim feels organic, not unlike something you would see in a colorful graphic about cell structure. Namely, in “Unify of Discrepancy”, each of the relatively whimsical prints and shapes is placed carefully and with intent- like the cytoplasm and ribosomes of a cell.
On Kim's instagram, it's evident the inspiration she takes from the color of the world around her, from marbles to magnets to golf balls- spherical shapes and vibrant colors. While sketches from behind the scene assemble something of a Tetris game., filled with different shapes and angles. All of which appear as inspiration in the colorful and shapely nature of Kim's work.
Cho Hyeon Kim graduated in 2022 from Central Saint Martins. Kim's work is a playful breath of fresh air and a whimsical interpretation of the world around her.

Tourner en dérision l'aspect pratique ou l'adopter ? L'interprétation est laissée à l'observateur avec le “Jacket Purse”. Ce qui se présente d'abord comme un gilet gris réversible est ôté pour révéler une fermeture éclair cachée et des emmanchures qui se transforment en poignées de sac.

Les croquis réalisés en coulisses ressemblent à un jeu de Tetris, avec des formes et des angles différents. Autant d'éléments qui inspirent la nature colorée et structurée de l'œuvre de Kim.
