However, thanks to the likes of Ashley Graham, Liris Crosse, Iskra Lawrence and others, the body positive message has been spread far and wide, breaking boundaries and moving us towards a more inclusive fashion industry. Despite this extraordinary progress, it has been predominantly on the side of women. Where is our male Tess Holliday or Candice Huffine?
Where are all the plus size men posing for top magazines? Well, YOU could be one of them! It’s hard enough to name a few plus size male models, let alone figure out how to get scouted as one, right? Step 1 – Choose a Modelling Agency

The road to total inclusivity is still long but it’s made shorter by people like Charlotte Griffiths and Beth Willis. These two British, boss-women founded Bridge Models, the UK’s first plus size agency for men, in 2016. The agency raises awareness about the damaging impact of unrealistic modelling standards by bridging the gap, (see what they did here), between established beauty standards and plus size, in hopes of promoting a healthier body image. Builder and personal trainer, Ben Whittaker was Bridge’s first signed model, as his lifestyle fully supports the agency’s desire to promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle. How did Ben go from laying bricks to posing for Ted Baker? A fluke, according to the model, but more like social media magic, according to us. Ben posted some headshots online and he was discovered by Bridge in no time.

Also established in 2016, Brawn is a division of the well-known agency, IMG Models. On a mission to diversify the modelling industry, plus size IMG male models have been featured in Vogue and ELLE, as well as having worked with well-reputed fashion brands and retailers across the globe. Darnel Ghramm signed with Brawn in 2018 after his clever recreation of A$AP Rocky’s Calvin Klein advert went viral. Brawn has given Darnel the space and audience to spread his wish of eliminating the word “plus” from fashion to simply become, “models”. I like where his head’s at!

Founded in 2011, Curve Model Management celebrates all shapes and sizes, representing models like AJ Buitendijk, Sabeian Gilzene and Cristian Paris. Step 2 – Applying
Choosing the right agency for you is extremely important. Make sure you do your research before applying to them as you want to work for agencies with similar values and standards to yours. The application process is easy and straightforward. All you need to do is provide some personal information along with a portfolio including a head-shot, side profile shot, and a full body shot. By applying directly to the agency, it is more likely to hear back from them quickly. Besides, the application literally takes ten minutes, so you have nothing to lose!

Having strong, diverse images in your portfolio is a huge help. Be sure to use clear, high quality photos of your gorgeous self in order to look as professional and slick as possible. To build a killer portfolio, you need a killer photographer – not literally, of course! In fact, make sure to do a little research about your chosen photographer and check out their work thoroughly, as there have been several instances of people posing as fashion photographers when they are far from it, so be alert and attentive! Bringing someone along on your first meeting, speaking to other models who have previously worked with photographers etc can be a help. Models have often gained work and connections by networking with various photographers, so choosing the right photographer could truly launch your career. Pour construire un portfolio mortel, vous avez besoin d’un photographe mortel — pas littéralement, bien sûr ! En fait, faites un peu de recherches sur votre photographe choisi et regardez leur œuvre en détail, comme il y a de nombreux exemples de certains d’entre eux qui font semblant d’être photographe de mode bien qu’ils soient loin de l’être, et donc faites attention ! Amener quelqu’un à votre premier réunion, parler à d’autres mannequins qui ont travaillé auparavant avec les photographes, etc., peuvent aider. Les mannequins ont souvent trouvé de travail et de liens grâce à la réseautage avec différents photographes et du coup, choisir le bon photographe pourrait vraiment faire lancer votre carrière.
