30 Reasons Victoria's Secret Can Kiss Our Fat Ass by Velvet d'Amour

This seemingly never-ending, passionate drive begging and pleading with Victoria’s Secret to include plus-size models is admittedly a phenomenon I can't seem to wrap my head around. If one feels the need to beg, by all means, prostrate yourself at the doorstep of Agent Provocateur for God's sake, but, Victoria’s Secret? Really?!?

Victoria’s Secret produces a well-crafted show, beyond that, meh. Additionally, if it is their brand's mission to exclude women of all shapes and sizes then it is their prerogative. .

What is disconcerting is that in this desperation for some sort of acceptance, we are forgetting those brands which DO take the time, energy, and effort to include us. More importantly, these brands do so with pride and creativity! As a tribute, I thought I would highlight some of those inclusive brands for which I have had the great pleasure to showcase in VOLUP2 Magazine.

You will see that plus size women are more than capable of marketing the seduction that is lingerie. Reality is that lingerie is worn by everyone and the trepidation that Victoria’s Secret displays by continually excluding what may be perceived of as an ‘average’ woman, is fraught with archaic notions of idealized ‘beauty’. We are fortunate to be living in a time of change, in which many, like VOLUP2, are actively choosing to showcase the beauty that is humanity. The glorious allure of authenticity. Yes, there is still this aspirational aspect of glamour but it is grounded in normalcy.

There are those who will site perceived notions of health, as to why one should ban plus size bodies from view, all the while ignoring the extreme, detrimental practices which models showcased in the Victoria’s Secret show actually undergo. It is an insult to our intelligence to continually pretend that these exceedingly inaccessible bodies haven’t in fact, encouraged a great deal of unsound practices in vain attempts to achieve this glorified ‘ideal’.

As well as routinely ignoring MENTAL HEALTH as of any importance in this great ‘health’ debate. We are living in a time when many women and children Hate their bodies, and this self hatred is rooted in the inundation of idealized imagery which is inescapable, be it on TV, in magazines, on billboards etc. These images undeniably underscore that unless you have this near unattainable Victoria’s Secret model type body- you don’t stack up. We don’t need to deny the decades of ancestry which help make up who we are. We have every right to revel in our every ‘imperfection’ and in doing so free ourselves to dedicate to issues beyond the frivolity of being included amoungst Victoria’s Secret’s Angels.
