David Bell is an emerging young talent who recently graduated from Northumbria University, where he studied Menswear and interned with J.W. Anderson. Bell has a taste for the theatrical, showcased in his final collection. In an interview with Nick Knight and other industry leaders, he explained the collection’s exploration into the relationship between masculinity and power. It is no secret that the social hierarchy is topped by men who, by means of oppression and privilege, maintain their position of power. Bell connected these ideas by using gendered garments like suits and corsets, reshaping their typical implications with dramatized silhouettes and proportions. Look six of the collection features an oversized trench coat embellished with a lace applique. The billowing sleeves nearly graze the ground at the cuff, and the coat cascades into a long train, almost suggesting the lingering effects of toxic masculinity. With impressive craftsmanship and romantic sensibilities, Bell is poised to enter the industry and immediately produce fantastic clothing.
