Sandra Backlund is a Swedish fashion designer who has turned the knitwear industry on its head, transforming knitwear into individual pieces of art. Her grandmother turned her onto fashion and the craft of knitting as a young girl. She graduated from Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm in 2004, and later went on to found her own label.
Sandra would describe herself as more of a sculptor than a tailor, making three-dimensional pieces designed both to fit the body and hold their shapes away from the body, creating a sort of body armor with a distinctly structural shape that also molds to the body. Her one-of-a-kind, three-dimensional knitwear focus on sculptural forms that borrow from both avant-garde and conceptual art. Sandra clearly has a passion for quality and craft, a close attention to detail, and a unique desire to discover unconventional materials and techniques.
At the height of her career, Sandra mysteriously disappeared, professionally speaking. No one was sure what happened to her or where she went. She explained her mysterious break, saying “I never stepped away completely, but since I was doing everything myself by hand and because what I do is so time-consuming, it came to a point where I had to put my collection on hold to be able to do other things I wanted in life.” In that time, she gave birth to two sons and dedicated her life to being a mother and to trying new things that she had not had the time for before. Since then, she has collaborated with Stockholm-based brand Urbanears, a company looking to present its wire-free headphones in a unique way, by utilizing fabric- wrapped cords. When asked if more of her artistry would be seen soon, Sandra responded, “I hope so. I’m knitting, but I’m not sure yet on what.”

Sandra Backlund est une créatrice de mode suédoise qui a bouleversé l'industrie du tricot en transformant les vêtements en pièces d'art individuelles. Sandra se décrirait davantage comme une sculptrice que comme une couturière, fabriquant des pièces tridimensionnelles conçues à la fois pour s'adapter au corps et pour conserver leurs formes loin du corps, créant ainsi une sorte d'armure corporelle avec une forme structurelle distincte qui se moule également au corps. Ses tricots tridimensionnels, uniques en leur genre, se concentrent sur des formes sculpturales qui empruntent à la fois à l'avant-garde et à l'art conceptuel. Sandra est manifestement passionnée par la qualité et l'artisanat, elle a le souci du détail et un désir unique de découvrir des matériaux et des techniques non conventionnels.
Au sommet de sa carrière, Sandra a mystérieusement disparu, professionnellement parlant. Personne ne sait ce qui lui est arrivé ni où elle est allée. Elle a expliqué cette pause mystérieuse en disant : "Je ne me suis jamais retirée complètement, mais comme je faisais tout moi-même à la main et que ce que je fais prend beaucoup de temps, il est arrivé un moment où j'ai dû mettre ma collection entre parenthèses pour pouvoir faire d'autres choses que je voulais faire dans la vie." Pendant cette période, elle a donné naissance à deux fils et s'est consacrée à sa vie de mère et à l'essai de nouvelles choses pour lesquelles elle n'avait pas eu le temps auparavant. Depuis, elle a collaboré avec la marque Urbanears, basée à Stockholm, qui cherche à présenter ses écouteurs sans fil d'une manière unique, en utilisant des fils enveloppés de tissu. Lorsqu'on lui a demandé si l'on verrait bientôt d'autres créations artistiques de Sandra, elle a répondu : "Je l'espère. Je suis en train de tricoter, mais je ne sais pas encore exactement sur quoi".
