NUTNU is the art-thesis work of Silpakorn University student, Nattapong Khongru, based in Thailand. Bursting with eccentric bows, beading, and streamers, NUTNU is a joyful commemoration of color.
However, far from just frivolous, NUTNU is complete with a video, “The Different Ideal Woman”, through which Khongru expresses the stories of two different women. Luisia Casati (an Italian artist) and E Sa (fictional character), combining their stories and qualities through clothing form to create an interpretation of the “ideal woman”: sophisticated and smart.
Giving background Luisia Casati, more than an artist, was also a muse of her time, while E Sa is the tale of a woman aspiring to garner money through marriage. Both are stories of tragic marriages and under the guise of expensive and elaborate clothes, hide glum storylines.
Beaded face masks, with exaggerated eyes and lips, seem to be a satirical take on the drastic expectations of beauty. Each look has seemingly a thousand layers to it, nylon, and finished with what must be close to 100 yards of beads, and shimmering metallic prints.
In the video, the models dance around one another donning stiletto metallic boots, accentuating the fanciful shapes of each elaborately decorated design. Upon closer observation, the anthropomorphic masks leave the viewer with an eerie taste. I feel like this could be Khongru’s way of referencing the darker themes behind “The Different Ideal Woman”.
The Uncanny Valley effect is when something comes off as almost human but not quite, this is how I interpreted the exaggerated beaded face masks by NUTNU. I think this is a form of expressing the inability to achieve ideal standards, by showing the women as vaguely non-human. Khongru utilizes this feeling to establish deeper meanings behind the seemingly light motifs.
Debuted in 2020, “The Different Ideal Woman” is an eccentric and joyful breath of fresh air from student Nattapong Khongru, boasting features from the vanillaissue and notjustalabel, the student is sure to have garnered attention.

Khongru utilise ce sentiment pour établir des significations plus profondes derrière des motifs apparemment légers.
