“What’s the purpose of a painted portrait when your iPhone has Portrait mode? I explore that idea by trying to bridge the traditional and the contemporary. I’m chasing a classic painterly feel using digital techniques, moving between modern and historical references, and re-thinking which people get celebrated in Western art. It’s all mixed up with my background as a theatrical costume designer. How do you inspire recognition and feeling in an audience before the character even speaks?
