To box in Jean Deaux is like trying to outrun a cheetah… it just cant be done. This multi medium and genre defying artist is a force to be reckoned with and is one that does it all. From singing, rapping, songwriting to directing her own and other’s music videos to other forms of visual art, she is a creative mind to say the least. She has directed videos for Smino, KIANA and her own videos including a song and video she released with Khelani. She also co-wrote one of Khelani’s biggest hits Honey that came out in 2017 and is my personal favorite of Khelani’s discography. Jean Deaux takes inspiration from many legendary artists including her friends that she works with but also legends like Missy Elliot and Amy Winehouse among many others. 

Born and raised in the west side of Chicago Jean started consistently making music in her cousin Saba’s basement for the first two years of her career before starting to work with other people in the music industry of Chicago. She met a lot of her contacts, some that she still works with today, in high school at the YOUMedia after-school program located in the Harold Washington Library. That community of creatives helped push her to form the base of her artistry and career in recording and songwriting. In the early 2010s she started making waves outside of Chicago with her work on Soundcloud and her features on other artist’s songs including Smino, Isaiah Rashad, Mikki Blanco and Saba.

In the late 2010s Jean Deaux started releasing singles on major streaming platforms and gained mainstream attention when being featured on Saba’s song Photosynthesis in 2016 and releasing her single Wikipedia in 2017. In the fall of 2018 her debut EP Krash came to light which featured catchy singles Energy and Back 2 You and a host of features including Ravyn Lenae, Bari, Kari Faux and Drea the Vibe Dealer. The EP came stacked with versatility with songs for the dreamy neo soul heads like Way Out and Deserve (More) and songs with true hip hop and trap roots like Krash and Work 4 Me. My personal favorite, a gem that gets overlooked, Code always impresses all of my peers who work in music or friends who don’t pay attention to the R&B or Hip Hop world and like more Alternative Rock music. 

The following year in 2019 Jean released her Sophomore EP Empathy which featured the single Anytime that has her biggest number of streams to date. The song features producer ROMderful and R&B songstress Khelani and it widened her audience further into the R&B and pop realm. The dreamy EP features hits like Life Lines that features DUCKWRTH and Terrace Martin, Break Time and Speakerphone among many others.

This year Saba returned the favor of featuring on Jean Deaux’s first single on her most recent EP Watch This! The duo got sassy and confident on the single Moody which gave us bars on bars from both artists respectively, as they should. The EP also featured emerging rapper from Atlanta, Yung Baby Tate on the song Flick! (Stacey). Other hidden gems like Recipe! gave us some groovy hip hop vibes and OK! gave us some slight XXXTentacion inspired bars with enough drip to flood The Sahara. 

The future is bright for Jean Deaux and for her career this is only the beginning and our team at VOLUP2 cannot wait to see where she goes and how she grows as a creative and voice in our culture today. Thank you Jean for being someone who always challenges our perception of what a black woman in music and film can be and for always being true to yourself.

Enfermer dans une boîte Jean Deaux, c'est comme essayer de semer un guépard... c'est tout simplement impossible. Cet artiste multi-medium qui défie les genres est une force avec laquelle il faut compter et un touche-à-tout. Qu'il s'agisse de chanter, de rapper, de composer ou de réaliser ses propres clips et ceux des autres, elle fait parler son esprit créatif, c'est le moins qu'on puisse dire. Elle a réalisé des clips pour Smino, KIANA et ses propres vidéos, dont un morceau et un clip qu'elle a réalisé avec Khelani. Elle a également co-écrit l'un des plus grands succès de Khelani, Honey, qui est sorti en 2017 et qui est mon titre préféré dans la discographie de Khelani. Jean Deaux s'inspire de nombreux artistes légendaires, notamment de ses amis avec lesquels elle travaille, mais aussi de légendes comme Missy Elliot et Amy Winehouse parmi tant d'autres.

La chanson met en scène le producteur ROMderful et la chanteuse R&B Khelani et élargit son public dans le domaine du R&B et de la pop. L'EP onirique comprend des tubes comme Life Lines qui met en vedette DUCKWRTH et Terrace Martin, Break Time et Speakerphone entre autres.

Cette année, Saba a récidivé en figurant sur le premier single du dernier EP de Jean Deaux, Watch This ! Le duo se montre insolent et confiant sur le single Moody où leur flow respectif puissant et tout en rimes s'enchaine, comme il se doit. Sur l'EP, on retrouve également le rappeur prometteur d'Atlanta, Yung Baby Tate, sur la chanson Flick ! (Stacey). D'autres joyaux cachés comme Recipe ! nous ont fait vibrer et groover et sur OK !, on retrouve un flow presque à la XXXTentacion si fluide qu’il pourrait refroidir un réacteur nucléaire.

Le futur est prometteur pour Jean Deaux et pour sa carrière, ce n'est que le début. Notre équipe de VOLUP2 est impatiente de suivre son parcours et son évolution en tant que créatrice et porte-parole de notre culture actuelle.
