Planning a trip in 2020? Here is a guide to traveling in this new world. by Victoria M. Follain Translated by Jordan Riviere

2020 has given us a new meaning of needing a vacation. I know we've all said it a million times, but this one feels well deserved. As we’ve been looking out our windows at the world it is hard to grasp how long it’s been since it’s been safe to get out there and see the world. As some cities are opening back up and traveling becomes more of an option again, let’s bring to light some of the factors we must think about that we may not have had to before.

Over the course of the last few months, we have learned a new sense of normal when it comes to our daily life. Traveling needs that same sort of attention. This includes bringing masks with you to make sure you have the necessities no matter how quick the task. At hotels keeping your mask on when not in your room is as important as grabbing your room key. This is even recommended when going to the pool or even just getting ice. Even if you are confident in yourself this curtesy is for others around you and simply allows for a worry-free vacation.

Most pools are beginning to open back up at hotels around the world. The pool amenities are one of the more desirable treats when traveling. The masks are not typically required when in the pool or going to and from it. This is when I’ve noticed social distancing being strictly enforced. Lifeguards on site pools will bring attention to groups who go too close to others. This allows for you and your family to stay safe in these uncertain times. Knowing the limits and respecting those is the best way to be courteous of others around you.

When traveling sometimes you end up having to wait in line. This can happen more than expected since most places have a capacity they are adhering to. When doing this, natural spacing needs to be considered regardless of the amount of space provided. Allowing at least a six-foot difference in between parties is expected, so following this should be a top priority even if that means you’re outside the door or against a wall. Employees may enforce mask requirements and social distancing measures to guarantee this, don't be mad at them! This action assures you of this opportunity.

If we all haven’t heard it enough washing your hands is such an important factor in traveling in 2020. Everyone needs to work together by using hand sanitizer and washing their hands repeatedly for the best outcome. To verify your safety this is going to be your best friend on vacation. Be sure to use warm water and try singing the happy birthday song to make sure you’ve completed a full service clean!

When traveling it is important to make sure you are aware of any symptoms that could be linked to the virus. Temperature checks are done at most hotels and travel hotspots upon arrival daily. This will be done with a temperature gun faced towards your forehead. If you would prefer this can also be taken on your wrist. Some locations are even having travelers sign paperwork to verify they are not showing symptoms and it is not at the fault of their facility if you encounter the virus.

With this, it is important to acknowledge that traveling does increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19. Since you can contract COVID-19 without any symptoms it is important to be tested if you have been in contact with anyone who has been exposed to the virus. Please do not travel if you have been exposed to COVID-19 in the past 14 days. Now happy traveling!
