Christopher Edwards De La Cruz is a recent Central Saint Martins graduate- and one of the most promising young knitwear designers of this decade. You may even recognize some of De La Cruz’s work from McQueen SS23, it would be near impossible to detail all of De La Cruz’s work, from energetic showcases like “QUEER HOOD” to melancholic exhibits like his feature in Numero Netherlands magazine, the designer already has an impressively long archive.
Standing out against his portfolio of colorful designs is De La Cruz’s 2021 CSM white show look. A white puffy mini dress, with elegantly enormous white sleeves. The bodice is a quilted pattern, flowing into a deconstructed skirt. The model dons a purple face mask with protruding devil horns and a black bonnet. It looks straight out of a picture book with the crisp detail of the face mask and the whimsical shape of the dress.
De La Cruz’s work exhibits immense amounts of detail, best described as a collage of fabrics and textures. Focusing again on Cruz's collection “QUEER HOOD”- made up of cowboy hats, feathers, flowers and gold boots. De La Cruz’s distinctive style draws viewers in, by not only utilizing modern colors and trends but by mixing them with dated fixtures and unconventional mediums, Cruz’s work can't be defined as just one thing.
Cruz’s lengthy list of accomplishments includes Vogue Arabia, I Granary, and Dazed Magazine. He might only be 23, but De La Cruz is no stranger to the fashion world, he attended Art & Design High School in New York, even going on to have his very first garment ever put on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
